good: Nelson mandela
Born on the 18th of July, 1918 in South Africa.
Becoming heavily involved in the anti-apartheid movement
Nelson Mandela strived to create peace between the White
and Black races in South Africa. For 20 years he directed a
campaign of non-violent defiance against the South African
government and the racist policies it up holded.
Apartheid means "separateness" in Afrikaans. It grew to be a
system of government that discriminated against the black
Africans. Nelson Mandela and other like-minded South Africans
fought against this discrimination for many years. People all
throughout South Africa were segregated into different categories:
White, Black, Asian or Indian. There were separate schools, buses
shops and hospitals for coloured people. In 1958 the black race
was deprived of their citizenship.
Mandela worked with the African National Council in an attempt
to put an end to the horrible discrimination. Passive resistance
was not being successful. Plans were made to bomb places of importance
to the apartheid government, although they were always planned
to avoid serious injury or death of fellow civilians.
Under the apartheid government, Mandela was tried for treason and
was sent to Jail for 27 years.
However he never gave up the fight for what he believed in.
Through-out the world his anti-apartheid messages gained in
popularity. After being released in 1990, he went on to
become the first coloured president in South Africa, also
putting an end to the apartheid government.
Racism was a huge problem in South Africa (and still is today),
however due to Mandela's perceived efforts over a span of 40
years, the severity of racism decreased significantly. For this is
the reason why is categorised as a GOOD person.
